10 Things About Me

I have a great post planned for tomorrow that I hope you'll all get a kick out of but for now I present to you... 10 things you probably don't know about me!!

1. When I was little, I wanted to be a Price Is Right Girl. I spent hours practicing the hand wave to show off the products & prizes so I could be just as good as Janice, Diane & Holly.

2. I love storms - lightning, thunder, fog, hail... it inspires me. I'm always disappointed when it clears up. Just call me Shirley Manson... I'm only happy when it rains....

3. I totally agreed with John Cusack's character in High Fidelity when he was talking about the importance of song placement on mix tapes. It was always the most important thing to find the perfect "First Song." I had to start with something powerful like "Knee Deep" by 21 Guns, "Guns In The Sky" by INXS or "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by Lenny Kravitz. Slow songs belonged in the middle but I always ended on an up note. Now with mix CD's, it doesn't matter as much; I just put it on "shuffle."

4. I played french horn in 6th grade. I sucked. Hard.

5. I crack my knuckles all the time. Dad will hit me in the head if I'm close enough to him to get me to stop.

6. I can pop my jaw. It freaks people out. I saw it once when I was little being done on "That's Incredible." Mom, Dad & Derek were all icked out by the man on TV and I said "What's the big deal? I can do that." And I did. Then they were icked out with me!

7. I've had two jobs that I worked one day and never went back: Captain D's (I worked the drive thru... I got a $5 tip cuz I comped a lady who waited 45 minutes for her food!) & the Chapel Hills Mall theatre. Both were desperation jobs - I thought I needed something besides Fargos or Atmel then decided I didn't need a 2nd job that bad!

8. I had the #1 radio show in Colorado Springs for the time slot 7p-12a on Oldies 92.9 for a while. I was a star!! LOL

9. I sing with any song I know the words to, regardless if I like it or not. It's a disease.

10. I love true crime shows like American Justice, Cold Case Files, etc. One night I watched a marathon of them on A&E and then got all scared that someone was going to break into the house and kill me!

So there you have it! 10 little known facts. I'm sure Derek and Collin knew a couple... maybe all... I hope everyone had a fun Memorial Day Weekend!!

How sad!

Pretty picture, though!! This is to keep everyone occupied during the weekend! Don't forget to check out Friday's photoblog below if you haven't already!!

Depressed
Your connection with darkness is through your
depression. Hated, sad and often feeling
lonely, there is only a few that appreciate the
real you. You tend to keep to yourself and away
from the world since you don't want to be hurt
and betrayed again. Music gives you the
understanding you need to get through, it's
your "therapy". Or you express
yourself through art or writing. Chances are
you're also an anti-social person, who only
likes being with close friends, if even that.
The world has finally showed it's true face for
you and you wish life wasn't this miserable to
live through. Maybe you'll find happiness in
the future, but right now you're just hiding
away from the world. Who needs people anyway?

Home Sweet Home

It's time once again for a Phun Phat Photoblog! Yaaaay! Today we'll be touring my humble abode. Keep hands and feet inside the car at all times and don't forget to tip your guide! Here we gooooo...

So this is the view from the front door. My bathroom. Why would you design an apartment like this?? I think it's weird. Hence the pretty shower curtain, a housewarming present from Mom & Dad. It was either that or keep the door shut! Oh, and check out the great doormat - farm animals!! Whoo!

So this is my bed. Like the GIR pillowcase? Collin bought that for me! And then there's the bed crew, making it look cheery. The Kaa I got at Collin's Aunt's flea market for $3!! I love him - I use him to block the sun from eyes when I'm sleeping. The pink monkey is Poppy, the dog is Grace Ella and then there's Bunny - he's related to Derek's Peanut Bee.

Living room shot #1. My renaissance art...the painting above the fireplace (The Accolade by Edmund Blair Leighton) is my favorite painting ever! The one on the left is also by Leighton. You can also see a small part of my CD collection. I counted them once...I think it was over 2,000. Or maybe it was 1,200. Either way - there's a bunch!

Living room shot #2. The TV, etc. You can see The Manchurian Candidate DVD waiting to be watched. It was pretty good. The three pictures on the wall to the right I will post at some time...it's the Me & Famous Men Wall! :)

Living room shot #3. My computer screen looks dirty but that's really just the screen saver...it's a bunch of sparkly flying dots. The picture above the desk is an Egyptian collage that Mom bought me a couple years ago. To the right under the clock is a certifcate that I have saying that I have a doctorate in Classic Rock with a major in Badfinger. Hell, yeah!!

Living room shot #4. More of my CD collection. And my awesome Black Cat picture. I didn't get any shots of the dining room or the kitchen...it would just be more CD's and...a kitchen.

And here we have the now hard-to-find Darth Tater. How cute is he??? He was a gift from Collin. He's sitting on the window between the living room & the kitchen, defending my place! But now for the Coup de Grace:

It's Pudding!! I love this mouse! My favorite childhood toy! He used to be covered in fur but I wore it all off. I have him sitting on the nightstand by the bed.
So there you have it - my home. Hope everyone has a great weekend!!

When We Run Out Of Band-Aids

Jordyn should be a nurse when she grows up. Every time I've gotten hurt around her she's always right there with Neosporin and Band-Aids to fix me right up!

Last week I was at Collin's watching the kids and I went to pick up a chair and lift it over the corner of the mattress to get it by the computer so Jordyn could join me in making Dollz. I must have done something wrong because I got a sharp pain in the side of my head; very sharp, very painful and very quick. It was gone in the blink of an eye but I still cried out. Jordyn asked me ' what was wrong and I told her that my brain almost exploded.

"Ooo... I don't think I have enough Band-Aids for that, Heather."

She's so cute!

A Photo-Blog for your Monday

For your Monday pleasure I present my 2nd ever photo blog! Enjoy!!

This is me & my friend Rhonda. This was taken in the photo booth at Torchlite Skate Center for my birthday party in 1982. I don't even remember having a Torchlite Skate Center - thank God I write on the backs of pictures!! I look so thrilled, yeah?

This is Rhonda & I again, this time at Derek's 6th birthday party. Notice the Popeye gumball machine! I'm wearing my Mork & Mindy shirt which I was thrilled with! I got it from the Sears catalogue. Not sure what's up with my face!!

Once again, Rhonda & myself making weird faces. Aparently that's the weirdest face I could think of to make. That's in my room...1984...I was 13. All my posters of Thomas Howell, Wham!, Duran Duran...pretty girly-cool, huh?

That's me with the headphones on. It's my last day on the air at KEPC, the college radio station I was on. This was 1990. The guy with his mouth wide open is Christopher Schodorf, the guy from England I mentioned a few posts ago whom I was madly in love with and he got me a yo-yo for Christmas! Pbbt! The guy behind me is Perry - we dated kinda...very cute guy! And then there's Glenda. She was weird. Vicki took this picture right as I flipped the mic on and she knocked the station license down and broke the frame. And it all went over the air! I think I handled it professionally. I hope I did!

This is yours truly at Fargo's in that stinking Victorian dress. My skirt weighed a ton! And we had to keep our hair back which I was no good at. I cut my hair short later so I wouldn't have to deal with putting it up all the time!

Last but not least....this was a joint birthday party for my Grandma Knight (My dad's mom) and myself. I'm not sure what transpired before this picture was snapped but look at the looks on the faces of Grandma and my cousin Mandy. My best bud Troy, in between them, is totally oblivious to whatever just happened, although Heather & Derek in the background are looking just as shocked at Grandma. I'm wondering if Mandy said something odd...

So there you have it! Another photo blog under my belt! Hope everyone has a great Monday!!

Don't Mess With Me, Man!

Assassin

You are an
assassin.

That means you are a proffessional and do your
job without mixing any emotions in it. In your
life you have probably been hurt many times and
have gotten some mental scars. This results in
you being distant from people. Though many
think that you are evil, you are not. What you
really are is a person, trying to forget your
pain and past. You are the person who never
seems to care and that is why being an assassin
fits you good. Atleast, that's what people
think. Even if you don't care that much for
your victims, you still have the ability to
care and to generally feel. It is not lost,
just a little forgotten. In crowds you tend to
not get to noticed, and dress in black or other
discrete colours. You don't being in the
spotlight and wish people would just leave you
alone. But once you do get close to someone you
have a hard time letting go and get real down
if you loose him/her.

Main weapon: Sniper

us to keep out the sadness also keep out the
joy" -Jim Rohn
Facial expression: Narrowed eyes

Hey Andy! Guess What I Got?

The image “http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000D0YT4.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

A couple weeks ago, in response to my rant about music artists, Andy commented that I needed to buy this DVD. Well...last night Collin surprised me by purchasing it for me. It's just as wonderful as Andy said it would be. Here's the track listing:

1. Prologue: Photographs And Memories
2. You Don’t Mess Around With Jim
3. Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels)
4. Roller Derby Queen
5. One Less Set Of Footsteps
6. Next Time, This Time
7. Speedball Tucker
8. Lovers Cross
9. Workin’ At The Car Wash Blues
10. Interlude: I’ll Have to Say I Love You In A Song
11. Bad, Bad Leroy Brown
12. New York’s Not My Home
13. The Hard Way Every Time
14. Rapid Roy
15. These Dreams
16. Epilogue: Time In A Bottle

It's all live performances with the exception of the first & last tracks which are photo montages & home video footage, respectively. It's sooooo awesome! To Andy: Thank you for alerting me that this DVD existed. To Collin: MWAH! Thanks for buying it for me! We watched it last night while we ate dinner with Collin's kids. His 12 year old son wasn't too impressed (at least he didn't seem to be) but Jordyn, the 5 year old music connoisseur, loved it all. She called it "beautiful music." Girl's got some good taste!!

If you're a Jim Croce fan at all, take Andy's advice & GET THIS DVD!!

Here It Is!! What You've All Been Waiting For!

Finally - I got this photo thing down! Whooo!!! So, without furthur ado, I present my first official Photo-Blog Wednesday:

  • This is my friend Billie Jo & I last year at her surprise bachlorette party. We went to The Ritz Bar & Grill downtown...it was a lot of fun despite the fact that some guy literally knocked me out of the way to tell Billie's friend Renee how beautiful she was! Pbbt! Like her bunny-eared veil? We all got a chance to wear it!

  • This one is from way back in 1989, my senior year of high school. That's me on the left with my friend Shanon. Don't you think she looks like Christina Ricci in Sleepy Hollow? I wish you could see my t-shirt - it's a Harley Davidson James Dean shirt - very cool for a James Dean freak like me!

  • Here's Shanon again in her house wearing the prom dress that she made. That's right - she made that dress!! Isn't it gorgeous? She's always been creative like that.

  • And not to be left out, here's me in my prom dress. I didn't make it, I had Mom buy it for me at Jessica McClintock. I had seen it in the store at the mall for about two weeks but I didn't have a date for the prom. The guy I was supposed to go with said he had been grounded for sneaking out of the house but I think he just didn't want to go with me. Anyway...Shanon talked me into going with her & her date, Terry. Terry had an awesome Mustang so I went. And I got the dress I had been ogling.

  • This was taken at my birthday lunch 2 years ago at Zio's. This is Shanon's daughter Elena. I love this picture...I tried for so long to get her to look at the camera and she finally gave in & posed for me!

  • Here's my most recent photo of Elena. How adorable is she?? Shanon took this picture in their yard. Doesn't it look professional? Photography is just one more thing Shanon is really good at!

So there you have it! My first ever Photo Blog!

    Better Than Sex

Now that I've got your attention...

    :)

I plan on doing my first ever Photo Post this afternoon after I wake up so hold tight for that. But to keep you entertained, I offer up this little story.

(It's another Fargo's story, by the way.)

I worked for a while with a guy named Mark Sledge. He was in Derek's grade in school. I thought he was cute so I would talk to him whenever I got the chance. I was a hostess and he was a cook at the time so we got to talk a lot.

One night, either a grueling Friday or Saturday, we were standing around waiting for Final Call. (I always gave the Final Call. I loved doing it: {ahem} "Ladies & Gentlemen, may I have your attention please. This is the final call for the bar and salad bar... the final call for the bar and salad bar. Thank you.") Mark was hanging out by the order spindle while I was standing by my till with another hostess, an older lady named Vicky.

We were talking about what we were going to do when we got home that night. Vicky was headed straight for bed while I was planning to read (big surprise there huh?). Mark, however, had something totally different in mind. "I'm gonna go home, take off my shoes and my socks and scratch the heck outta my legs where the socks were. Man, that's better than sex!!"

"You're still a virgin, aren't you," I asked him. Vicky started laughing and Mark said seriously, "Try it when you get home and tell me I'm not right."

So I did. I'm not saying he was right but there are days (like right now as I'm writing this after being at work 11 hours) that I contemplate his philosophy. It DOES feel awful good.....

    Cops Love Doughnuts

You know it's true. There's a reason behind all those jokes you hear. I had one incident occur that drove home to me just how true the love affair between cops & their doughnuts is.

It was about 10 years ago... maybe more... I was working the closing shift at Fargo's and a friend of mine, Kym, was my late girl. She stayed to help me get everything done and afterwards we went to Dunkin Donuts for, what else, doughnuts. We went to one on Colorado Avenue about 20-30 minutes away from Fargo's. We got our treats and headed back to Fargo's parking lot to eat, listen to music & talk.

We had been sitting in the parking lot for about 15 minutes when suddenly the alarm inside the pizza place went off. For some dumb reason, Kym decided that if someone was breaking in, she wanted to catch them or get a look at him so we could make an I.D. So off she went, driving around the building but we didn't see anyone. Just as she pulled back into her parking space by my car, the cops showed up. They had seen he driving around the building so they immediately came up to us, asking what we were doing.

Kym explained that we worked there, had just gotten off & went to Dunkin Donuts. I showed him the bag. His eyes lit up and a wide grin spread across his face at the mention of donuts. "Oh, the one over here on Bijou & Circle?"

There was a Dunkin Donuts on Bijou & Circle?? For those of you not from The Springs, Fargo's is on Platte, pretty close to Circle. Bijou is only 1 street down. We honestly didn't know that but we said "yes" anyway. We didn't want to look stupid & tell this guy we went all the way to Colorado Ave for doughnuts when there was one 5 minutes away!

It turned out that no one was trying to break in, there was a short in the alarm. We didn't get busted but I think we have the doughnuts to thank for that one!! If we hadn't eaten them all, we would have offered one to the cop, made his night! :) But, when I think about it, who would know better than a cop where all the doughnut stores were?

    In lieu of photos

I swear I'll get to doing the photo blog! I just need Collin's help and he's sleeping right now. So! Instead you get a quiz that I lifted from Restless Angel.

    1. Total number of books I've owned: In my whole life? Pfft!! I can't count that high! Seriously. I just bought like...40 books on Thursday at used book stores!

    2. The last book I bought: See above question!! I won't list them all...just the last one I picked up which was Domino by Phyllis Whitney.

    3. The last book I read: Hardware by Linda Barnes. I'm almost finished with The Best Revenge by Stephen White.

    4. 5 books that mean a lot to me: I don't read anything deep enough for books to "mean a lot" to me so I'll list my faves:

    1. The Road To Paradise Island - Victoria Holt

    2. The Mummy - Anne Rice

    3. Postmortem - Patricia Cornwell

    4. Lightning - Dean Koontz

    5. The Golden Unicorn - Phyllis A. Whitney

Actually, maybe The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd means a lot to me because it was the only Agatha Christie mystery that I figured out on my own! I just recently picked up three hardback collections of Agatha Christie novels...2 Miss Marple & 1 Perot. I can't wait to get started reading them...but with all the books I've bought lately, I don't know where to begin. I saw a bumper sticker the other day that was very ME: "So many books, so little time."

    Play It Again, Sam

Every day before work, I walk around Quail Lake with Prescilla, a lady I work with. Lately, we've noticed a lot of people with dogs. All kinds of dogs... huskies, labs, retrievers, spaniels, pugs, dobermans & corgis. We started talking yesterday about what kind of dog we wanted most. Prescilla wants a cocker spaniel. I want either a husky, a german shepherd, a corgi or an english sheepdog. But not just any english sheepdog, thank you very much. He would have to be just like Sam.

When Mom's youngest brother Ray married his wife, Mary Beth, she had an english sheepdog named Sam. He was the best! He caught Frisbees in his mouth, played tug... was just an all around cool dog! One year, Ray & MB went to Detroit and we dog-sat Sam. Mom & I thought maybe it was because I wore a white cardigan sweater like MB had, but for whatever reason, Sam latched on to me. He followed me everywhere and even slept on my bed with me. He was a big dog and he would jump up on the bed, lay spread out on his side facing me and fall asleep, panting doggy breath in my face. I didn't mind, though.

One night, I wanted Mom to hear a song. Strangely enough I remember it was "I'll See You In My Dreams" by Giant & to this day, that song reminds me of this anecdote. We went into my room and I sat on the edge of the bed across from the stereo, cueing up the song. Sam jumped up on the bed behind me, followed by Mom. Sam immediately pushed her off. She tried one more time to sit on the bed but Sam was right there, ready to use his head to knock her off. That was MY bed and only me (& my Sam) were allowed on there!!

I miss Sam. He's been gone for a long time now but I'll never forget him. I'm going to look for some pictures of him and I'll post them tomorrow - something for you all to look forward to! :)

The Proof Is In The Pudding

What exactly does that mean, "the proof is in the pudding?" It sounds like something from an Agatha Christie mystery -

    "Mr. Mallory did it."
"But, Miss Marple! However did you deduce that?"
"The pudding, my dear man! The proof is in the pudding."

But I'm getting off track. What I really wanted to talk about today was Elena. I haven't had the opportunity to blog about her in a while and she gave me ample material last week!!

For any new readers, Elena is the three (almost 4!!) year old daughter of my friend Shanon. Collin recently taught me how to be a photo blogger so on a day off, I'll be posting pictures, including one of Elena & Shanon so everyone can see them! But for now, you'll have to be content with the story. But it's funny, trust me!

Shanon, Elena & I went running around on Friday. One of the places we hit was the Goodwill to check out their selection of books. She was good, keeping herself occupied while we looked at books by playing with her toy horse, Buck. She would make him eat things or gallop across shelves. As we were walking towards the checkout counter, Buck hit a teacup and knocked it off. It broke. Buck got sent into timeout in Shanon's purse while Elena got a talking to about how she needed to be more careful.

A lady that worked there came over with a broom and, although Shanon insisted on paying for the cup, the lady insisted harder that she didn't need to. Shanon had Elena apologize to the lady who was very sweet to her. Then another shopper came over to congratulate Shanon on how well she handled the situation without yelling at her daughter. Elena was so thrilled that she wasn't getting into trouble that she threw her arms around Shanon's legs and proclaimed, "Mama, you're the best!!!"

Then it was my turn. She threw her little arms around my legs, looked up at me and said, "Heather, you're just weird!" So there you have it! The verdict is in, I am weird. Shanon's The Best and Heather is Just Weird.

But you all knew that anyway.

Hey! Where Did My Protocol Go?!?!?

Last night at work, we had a buddy trainer class. They've recently gotten a new supervisor in the training department & he's totally revamping things; we ended up with 2 new people in charge of our training. The original 2, Debi & Inge, were good. I liked them both, even if dealing with Debi's audits made me physically ill 2 hours beforehand. Debi was demoted but stayed with training while Inge is now an operator on our shift. The new 2 I will call Barbie and Wilson. Barbie because she looks like a Barbie Doll and Wilson because this guy should have been a Beach Boy!!

Anyway, they're both nice enough people but they don't know our area like Debi & Inge did. They're from the fab which is a whole different world. We're a lot more relaxed over here, we wear a smock rather than the whole bunny suit get-up, we get to read while we work and we can take breaks whenever we want. I don't think Fab people know what to make of us Asic Test people.

Last week, we had a PAT Team meeting for Buddy Trainers (these new people are very action-oriented). Our supervisor asked all 5 of us Buddy Trainers to go so Asic would get good representation. So we all went. The meeting was held in Fab 5 (about as far away from our area as you could get) and by the time we got there, all the seats at the table had been taken by Fabbers. We all sat in chairs against the wall so that Barbie's back was to us.

Wilson pretty much did all the talking and after discussing something about general protocol, Barbie turned to us & said, "Do you guys have protocol over in Asic?" We all just stared at her & finally Prescilla said, "Yes." Barbie replied with, "I don't know your area so I'm just asking." The more I thought about that, the more annoyed I got. Why wouldn't we have protocol? We work for the same company!! Then about 15 minutes later, she turns to me and asks, "Do you have wafer handling protocol over there, as well?" I had to bite my tongue so that all I said was "Yes." What I wanted to say was:

"No! We have no rules!! We're savages!! We touch wafers with our bare hands, sometimes we even lick them! We put the wafer wands on our faces and smear the grease from our make-up & body oils all over the wafers!! We hang from the ceiling in loin cloths grunting in an unintelligible language!!" I mean, come on!! Seriously, we all work for the same company!! Why would we have different protocol than the rest of the place?

Tonight's class wasn't so bad. They did force me to get up in front of everybody for an exercise with 3 other Buddy Trainer's which was not cool. I hate being the center of attention in atmospheres like that when I only know 2 other people! Then they took our picture to post on the Buddy Training section of the company's website. I'll give it a couple days and if it's an okay picture of me, I'll link to it so y'all can see it. If the picture sucks then no linky!

We took a personality quiz in the class tonight which told me that I'm an introvert (duh!). The quiz told me that I'm a "Protector" and an "Architect." That was the only part of the class that I liked!

    Mom Said...

Mom & I went to see The Interpreter Wednesday. It was really good - if you get the chance, go see it. Sean Penn is sooo cool. Anyway, there was a scene where a couple of guys did something that was surely stupid and worthy of them not living anymore. Mom leaned over to me and whispered, "Well, that was dumb. They'll be dead when they get back." I actually laughed out loud during a very serious part of the movie - the people in front of me looked back, no doubt wondering what the hell I found so amusing.

Afterwards, we were talking about the previews we saw beforehand. One of them was for War Of The Worlds. Mom was surprised that it was a Tom Cruise/Steven Speilberg vehicle. I mentioned that I had read in Premiere magazine that there's going to be a surprise twist regarding the aliens at the end. Mom says, "Really? Is E.T. going to come and save everyone?"

Really, she needs to update her blog cuz she's really funny - she just doesn't realize it!

I guess I can do it...

I stole the game from Collin who snagged it from Defective Yeti. Most fun.

-Also, this is tragic. TRAGIC, I say!! I was sitting in my car waiting for Justin to get out of school and I looked in the rear view mirror and...oh my God...GRAY HAIR!! It was just everywhere, sprouting out in coarse curly tendrils....{SOB!!!} And I just had my hair colored! You'd think they would have had the decency to pop up BEFORE I had Shanon color it!! Yargh!

    Music Of The Night

I was reading through Jenn's blog and a couple posts back she wrote about how certain songs remind her of certain bloggers and she dared us all to to the same. Now in anything that has to do with music & fun, I'm right there!!

Collin - Hunh. I can't begin to list all the songs that remind me of him so I'll stick to The Song: Accidentally In Love by Counting Crows.

Derek - Youngblood by The Coasters (you should hear him sing this!)

Mom - The Final Countdown by Europe (her very favorite ever!)

Jenn - Wildside by Motley Crue (Anytime I see Nikki Sixx I think of Jenn. I just picked the first Crue video that popped into my head)

Seven - Girls Girls Girls by Motley Crue (He's always meeting these chicks and I also saw Vince Neil walking down the street when I was in New Orleans and he's there so....)

Derek S - Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones (because of his template)

Justin C - The Katamari Damacy Theme (heheh)

Restless Angel - Meant To Live by Switchfoot (I don't know why, though)

Foxy Mama - Foxy Lady by Jimi Hendrix (It just had to be!!)

    And those non-bloggers:

Andy K - Workin' At The Car Wash Blues by Jim Croce (The first non-family member I've known to love Croce as much as we do!!)

Ferret - The Ferret Song by Monty Python (pretty obvious!)

Shanon - Cuddly Toy by The Monkees (because I can still see her doing the Davey Jones dance in front of my house when we were in high school)

Well, that was fun!! Hopefully I didn't forget anybody! Have a great Tuesday...I know I will because I took the night off from work and am now embarking on a 5-day weekend!! Whoooo!

    Random Thoughts

"Sweetie, do you want to join the Columbia Record Club?"
"Whoa, hold on there, baby! I'm just not ready for that kind of a commitment!"

Derek will no doubt recognize that line from Weird Al's saga, "Albuquerque" (or however you spell it!). It's pretty true, though. Once you join that thing, you're stuck. I keep telling myself that I have to quit because I keep forgetting to reject my Selection Of Month and it charges right to my debit card but... I keep forgetting to! Soooo.... last week I received a 3-disc set from Columbia House called "70's Soft Side." 3 CD's of soft rock from my favorite decade of music. It's not too bad although there are some questionable choices like some goofy Delaney & Bonnie song, "Dueling Banjos", and Judy Collins singing "Amazing Grace." Collin skipped over that song when we were listening in the car Saturday afternoon.

There are some gems, though: "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight", "Time In A Bottle" & "Baby I'm-A Want You" are just a few. Saturday while Seals & Crofts' "Summer Breeze" was playing, I had an epiphany: in the 70's, people didn't care what you looked like. It didn't matter if you were as ugly as a mud fence, if you could sing and/or play an instrument well, you were in. We got some of the greatest artists that way: Jim Croce, Badfinger, BTO, Boston.

Now you have to be beautiful & have a great body. Britney Spears can't sing a lick but she's a superstar. Boy bands like NSync, 98 Degrees & The Backstreet Boys were put together for their looks, not their vocal ability. When you compare "This I Promise You" by NSync to "Dreamin' Again" by Croce, guess which one comes up way short? Jim Croce was a true talent, one of the greatest! Record companies didn't sign him because he was gorgeous or had a hot body. They recognized his talent in writing songs and singing them with a conviction that drew listeners!

How many acts from the 60's & 70's wouldn't have a chance now in the aesthetically minded 21st century? Bob Dylan, Mama Cass, Bachman-Turner Overdrive... none of them have the looks or the bodies to make in today's record industry. It wouldn't matter that they were talented! In fact, I bet that Mama Cass would have had her voice fronted by a skinny white girl who could dance just like Martha Wash did when she sang for C+C Music Factory. She was told people didn't want to see a 300 pound black woman singing. It didn't matter that the woman has a phenomenal voice!!

Okay, okay!! That's my rant for the day! Hope everyone has a stress-free Monday!
