Conversation While Watching The Broncos vs Cardinals
Me: Who in the world are we gonna cut? Both these punters look great!
|
Collin: I guess that's when you give them a gun with one bullet and go from there.
Me: Hey!!
Collin: What? We can't have the loser going to another team now, can we?

Busy Girl
I don't seem to post much anymore and I apologize. I'll be doing my end-of-month book & movie roundup next week...I left the book list at work and I've been off since Monday.
Monday night Mom & I went to the Broncos/Packers game at Mile High. We lost in overtime which in itself sucked but what was really bad was how many stinking Packer Fans (Or Facker Pans, as Mom called them) there were strewn about the stadium. Everywhere you looked there were Cheeseheads. Now I'm a Facker Pan, I love Brett Favre but the Broncos are where it's at and damn it, Mile High is OUR HOUSE! Now I understand completely Derek's rant last week on the Pod about the Steeler fans. Mom said the invasion of the Cheeseheads was worse. The guy who sat directly in front of me wore a Packers cap with a styrofoam deer wearing a cheesehead on his head - I couldn't see anything and thank God he was nice enough to realize that and remove it during plays but still! And then, the worst thing for me was after we lost, walking down the the tunnel the Facker Pans all started their "Go Pack go!" cheer, befouling my stadium!!!!!! I was incensed! Oh! And the real worst part? It was like 60-some degrees so even though I brought my awesome Broncos scarf that Kathleen made me, it was too warm to wear it! :( Although I have been wearing it around town!
And then....Wednesday Dad had a gastric bypass done. Everything went smoothly, "boring" as the doctor said, and he's in the hospital for 3-4 days so Mom & I have been there quite a bit this week. While we were waiting for news we got to talking to a lady who was sitting next to us and it turned out she was waiting for a friend who was having brain surgery! He had been in surgery since 6am and at 1:30pm the dr came out and said they were half done but everything was going well. After the dr left that poor woman burst into tears and made Mom and I cry, too! I felt so bad for her and I hope her friend's surgery went well. Dad's all laid up in a huge private room and doing well...he's got his giant crossword puzzle book so he's good and I'm on my way to see him now.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Denver Bronco cornerback Darrent Williams was killed in a drive-by shooting early Monday, a spokesman for his club said.
24-year-old Williams, who played for the Broncos on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, was riding in a limousine when shots were fired at his vehicle from another car.
Police said that three people were injured and they did not yet know the motive for the shooting.
Broncos spokesman Jim Saccomano said that the club felt 'incredible shock and sadness at a senseless tragedy.' "

If you would like to send a note to the family of Darrent Williams, go to DenverBroncos.com. At the bottom of the page is the "Share Your Thoughts" option.
I can't get over this tragedy. It's all I've been thinking about since I heard. It's senseless to lose a young life in such a stupid way. And not only because he was a famous athlete who played football for MY team. He was a son, a father, a friend, a teammate and a hero to lots of kids who play the game. My thoughts & prayers go out to his mother, his children and his friends & teammates who have lost a wonderful person in their lives.
One last Mile High Salute for Darrent Williams.

So Annoyed
Being a Bronco fan, I've learned how to take the good with the bad. There's always going to be someone who's talking trash about them and I have to defend them. Tonight, it happened when I wasn't expecting it - I mean, hell! We WON against Pittsburgh! There should be no trash talking! Here's the conversation between myself and Ted, the cleaning guy here at work:
Ted: There you are! Who did the Broncos play 2 weeks ago?
Me: Ummm.....
Ted: Wasn't it Indianapolis?
Me: No, Indy was last week. Two weeks ago it was Cleveland.
Ted: And didn't they barely win that one? Like, by a field goal?
Me: Maybe, I can't remember right off hand.
Ted: And then they got their asses kicked by Indy.
Me: There was no ass kicking! It came down to who scored last and it just so happened that Indy scored last.
Ted: No, that was an ass kicking.
Me: An ass kicking is 47-0 or 51-2. THAT'S an ass kicking! We were in the game the whole time. There was only 1 second on the clock after the field goal so we had no time to come back.
Ted: Well, it was an ass kicking to me. The defense had only allowed 1 touchdown up to that point...
Me: 2
Ted: 2, whatever, and they let Manning score what, 3?
Me: Something like that. But it's tough to stop someone like Manning.
Ted: Well, it was an ass kicking.
Me: Did you come in here specifically to piss me off? Why are you even talking about last weeks game? We won today, why aren't you talking about that?
Ted: Yeah, we beat Pittsburgh but it was a sloppy win. We almost lost that one, too.
Me: It got hairy for a bit but we still won.
Ted: Off of Pittsburgh's mistakes. The Broncos got 2 touchdowns in the first 4 minutes off of fumbles.
Me: No, the first touchdown came on our first posession. Then the kickoff was fumbled, we got it back and we scored. The first touchdown wasn't from a fumble.
Ted: But they scored twice within 4 minutes and couldn't hold on to the lead.
Me: What are you talking about? It was 14-10 at halftime. Pittsburgh was never ahead!
Ted: I watched that game today, all of it.
Me: Yeah, so did I.
Ted: I've got a 42 inch screen TV....
Me: I don't care how big your TV is, the point is the Broncos won and there was no ass kicking. They fucking won, what else do you want?
Ted: I should have known not to talk to a Bronco-Maniac about this.
AAAARGHHH!!! That man pisses me off so bad!! he's always so negative about the Broncos and yet he calls himself a fan! He told me as he was walking away that he must not be as hip on football today as I am. What the hell??? I hate talking football with him, I always end up pissed off!! I try to avoid him but he seeks me out! That makes me mad, too! Why can't he just leave me alone?
Of course, after I yelled at him, maybe he will from now on! That would make me happy!

I Believe In Mile High Magic
Sadly, the Magic did not help my boys on Sunday but it was still a fun game: the weather was perfect and we had good people around us and there was a lot of reasons to cheer. Here are the visuals:

Meet Bucky, the original Bronco from the old Mile High - I love this horse. They shoot fireworks off from the top of the Jumbo-Tron when we score touchdowns. Finally they got to shoot some off Sunday!!

Here's Mom; she's trying to smile without showing off the Thunderdog she's eating. See there's no coat on her? And there's no coat on anyone around us - - it was 70 degrees that day. So much better than the freezing rain during the New England game.

This is Ebenezer "Sneezer" Ekuban (91), Tatum "Tater-Tot" Bell (26) and Ian Gold (52) running in to the locker room before the game actually started. See Ian Gold - he's embracing the Mile High Magic!!

Finally! Here's Jake Plummer getting ready to lead his team to one of their 4 touchdowns! Go Jake!!

And this is Jake The Snake walking back to the huddle after one of his many numerous drinks of water. Arizona boy still not used to our altitude. Haha.

This guy was sitting right in front of us. He was so awesome - the perfect mix of enthusiasm for his team and respect for the people around him. There was a little boy sitting next to me in a little Plummer jersey and after every score, Painted Guy would turn around, slap me & the father a high five then bend down and get a high five from the kid. It was sweet. We also had a Colts fan in front of us, next to Painted Guy. When the game was over, when the Vinateri field goal was good, PG leaned over, tugged on the cheering Colts fan's sleeve and said, "Nice game, man" and slapped him a high five. That's classy!
There was also a flyover after the National Anthem - 4 jets - so so cool! So cool it was frigid! The only thing wrong with this game was the end result. We couldn't rattle Peyton Manning no matter how loud we screamed (we were the 3rd largest crowd at Invesco, by the way) and for some reason no one ever covered Wayne...Darrent Williams was just dreaming somewhere 10 yards away. But! No worries - Pittsburgh next so Darrent should redeem himself!
I BELIEVE IN MILE HIGH MAGIC!! I BLEED ORANGE AND BLUE! I AM A BRONCO FAN!

Bronco Season
Bronco Season never really truly begins for me until I've been to a game. And since I went to the Monday Night game last night against the Ravens, BRONCO SEASON IS HERE!!!
The game itself was pretty boring until the final 5 minutes when we started actually moving the ball down the field. And since it was so stinking cold out there, we needed a reason to get up and cheer! It rained the whole time and both Mom & I found out that the coats we wore that said they were waterproof...well, they weren't waterproof! We were both soaked to the bone by the time we got back on the bus.
ESPN covered the game last night and they had their little broadcast booth set up in the South Stands right in our normal walkway. Because of that, our Thunderdog stand was moved to the other side. Mom & I, desperate for our Thunderdogs, walked all the way across the South Stands to get them. The guy running the stand said to Mom, "You usually visit me over on the other side." We couldn't believe he recognized her after all the people he usually deals with. I told her he thought she was cute and she laughed at me. Later when we got to our seats, I realized he had left the caps on our bottled water and Coke. They're supposed to take those off as a security precaution. "See? He DID think you were cute!!"
Anyway, back to the ESPN thing - - we were about 20 feet away from the booth in our seats and had perfect views of Stuart Scott, Chris Berman, Steve Young, Michael Irvin & Tom "TJ" Jackson. It was so cool to see these guys up close! Especially TJ! I loved him when he played for the Broncos. I would have taken a picture of them but I didn't bring my camera because of the rain.
Jake Plummer did pretty well, despite the interception, although sometimes I question his decision making skills. Like the 3rd & 3 play where he could have run for the first down AND had the option of flipping it to a semi-open player and he just threw it away. Javon Walker is my new favorite player on offense - the man has got some hands!! Al Wilson (my favorite all around player since Trevor Pryce was let go) was all over the field with 12 tackles & 4 assists and did you see Darrent Williams' hair??? So funky!! I tried to find a pic online of it, this was as good as I could find. The picture of him is the last one if you click on the game pics link.
It was so wrong seeing Trevor Pryce wearing a Ravens uniform, playing for the Ravens, wearing #90, lining up against George Foster...all of it...so wrong. I miss Trevor!!
So - to end my football post, here's a conversation between Mom & I on the way up to the game:
Mom: Your Dad & I were watching the news about this protest of the Columbus Day Parade. The Native Americans were protesting that the Italians didn't discover America, they were here first and so on...and I relaized they were right so I told your dad, 'Yeah! It wasn't the Italians discovering America, it was my peeps!!"
Me: (laughing so hard I can't stand it. She said "PEEPS!")
Mom: Oh, that's not the funny part! Your Dad said , 'The Swedes?' and I said, 'No! My other Peeps!'
Have a great week, everyone!!!

Teaching The Young
Not only am I a giant Broncos fan, I love football as a whole. I will watch any game, pro or college, even if I'm not rooting for one particular team. I just really like football. And I think I'm passing this on to Collin's 6 year old daughter.
Tuesday night we were sitting in Culver's having dinner when Jordyn says, "I was watching Alan today..."
Collin: "Alan?"
Jordyn: "Yeah, you know...the show? She's really funny."
Me: "You mean Ellen?"
J: "Yeah, Ellen." 6 years old and her favorite show is Ellen Degeneres' talk show. Go figure. "Anyway, I'm watching Ellen and she starts talking about how happy she is that the Seahawks won and I'm all like, 'Ellen, I love you but the Seahawks?? Come on!'"
I had to hide my face, I was laughing so hard. I finally was controlled enough to tell her that it's okay that the Seahawks won because they weren't playing the Broncos. She nodded sagely as she ingested this piece of information. Then she blithely informed us all how much she likes football. I'm so proud!

*Sigh*
The headline in the Gazette's Broncos section yesterday read simply, "Bring It." Sadly, that's exactly what the Steelers did. They brought It. God, that was a sad game. Everything was going Pittsburgh's way and it just seemed that the Broncos' play was lackluster. They were definitely missing the spark they had last week when we faced New England. I know Jake was apparently recovering from the flu...he looked so annoyed with himself out there, I wanted to cry. And he tried to make the big plays - the first down pass to a double-covered Rod Smith when he could have tossed the ball to Mike Anderson who was wide open 2 yards in front of him took guts...I yelled at him for being dumb but it was still a gutsy play. Too bad more of those didn't work. And he was all adept at dodging those sacks. Our offensive line seemed to have broken down but Jake, sick & all, was able to keep from being sacked numerous times.
Ben Roethlisberger was on fire...it looks like he should play with a cast on more often. And that Troy Falamatu guy - whatever his last name is, I can never remember - he's EVERYWHERE! I swear to God, that man is a magician, just popping up wherever a play needs to be made. He amazed me. So now (Andy, you'll be happy) I'm rooting for Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl. Can't have the NFC showing us up. My supervisor is from Seattle and a die-hard Seahawks fan so I'm preparing myself for some trash talkin' in these next two weeks.
The saddest thing was that I was actually sick yesterday morning...either a stomach bug or I ate some bad ham. But I knew I couldn't call in sick - everyone at work knows how big of a fan I am and that Mom has season tickets. They wouldn't have believed I was at home dying, they would have thought I was at the game. Which I'm glad I wasn't - there were a ton of Steeler fans there. How did we let Mile High get so invaded???
So the Denver Broncos season ends in disappointment and heartbreak as the Steelers got their revenge by stealing the AFC Championship away from us at home like we did to them before SBXXXII. But if the Broncos' only accomplishment was putting Tom Brady out of the playoffs, that will work for me.
Oh and p.s. Jake has the better beard. Sorry Ben.

Why I Hate Tom Brady
Yes, yes, the New England game is over and it's time to focus on the Steelers coming to town but I have to rant and get this out.
I was sitting in the break room at work, minding my own business when here comes Ted, our cleaning guy. He drives me pretty crazy just on a general basis because he talks and talks and talks and everything is negative and he's always right! But he loves sports - at least loves to talk about sports - so when he saw me in there he had to ask me if I was going to the Bronco/Steeler game. I told him that Dad was going but I was happy that I had seen the New England game and that was enough fun to last me.
He starts in on Tom Brady and, he actually said this TO ME: "Tom Brady has more talent in his little finger than Jake Plummer will ever have." I felt the rage building. My vision was becoming red. I waved my arm at him and said, "Oh, just go! I hate him so much! He's such a whiny crybaby spoiled brat!!"
"Who, Jake," Ted says. Uh!
"No, Tom Brady! All game long Saturday he whined and complained to the officials about everything! Always pointing to one of the Broncos, trying to convince them that they had done something wrong and a flag should be thrown!"
"Well...Tom Brady may be a whiner but..." he looked blank for a second then all of a sudden he started talking about Vanderjagt missing the field goal at the end of the Colts game. He just didn't have a comeback for my tirade. I think he knew when he went too far.
I stand by how I feel about Brady. Can't stand him, wish he'd fall off the edge of the world and disappear. I'm sick to death of all these sports writers and analysts saying how he's the best quarterback the league has ever seen, even over superstars like Joe Montana, John Elway and Dan Marino. He gets named Sportsman Of The Year and for what? Their record was crap! Did he set any records this season? Sure, most of the time he's cool under pressure (but not with the south standers screaming in his ear and me hypnotizing him with my shiny pom pons) and has an arm but I don't think he deserves all the accolades he's been given.
Jake Plummer is not the next John Elway. No one will ever be John Elway. He was a legend in his own time and it's simply silly to try and make Jake live up to that. He needs to play his way and he's finally doing that and getting results. Sure, he wasn't on his game Saturday and the defense and special teams really helped win that game but all season long he's been playing good and getting the job done! After the 2nd or 3rd loss of the season, our newspaper ran the headline - "Jake back to old form: losing." That annoyed me to no end - it's not like we were losing every game we played...we lost 3 games this season. We had the 2nd best record in the NFL and Jake was a big part of that. People, especially the media, seem to forget that.
I have faith in Jake and the Broncos. We'll see you in Detroit.

Bleeding Orange & Blue
How about them Broncos?? Whooooo!!
Mom & I got to go to the playoff game Saturday against the defending World Chumps...umm...Champion New England Patriots and it was an incredible amount of fun. I actually took my camera and snapped a few shots before the game started. Afterwards there was too much going on so no pictures got taken. Here we go:

Here's Mom at Mile High, getting ready to eat her Thunder Dog, the normal Gameday fare.

Here's Matt Lepsis (78) throwing the ball around with Chris Meyers (62) pregame. Jason Elam is on the right and Todd "Big Leg" Sauerbrun on the left.

The Patriots warming up. Tom Brady is the blurry blob bending over in the middle somewhere. I hate the Pats, I can't stand Tom Brady. He's a crybaby whiner. All game long he whined and complained to the refs if something didn't go his way, which was a lot that night. There was one play where Al Wilson was coming up fast on his left and he panicked and threw the ball at his receiver's back. Then he ran to the ref, pointing at Wilson like a school boy, "He was running at me!!! Wannhhhhh!!!"

And here's my boys, the defensive line, running onto the field for warm-ups. Trevor Pryce (93) my very favorite player, is next to last. I was wearing my Pryce jersey (of course) and it was so warm that I never needed to cover it up with a coat!
And that's all for the pics. That game was so much fun!! We never sat down except for halftime. The entire game was spent on our feet screaming and stomping and cheering on our Broncos. I know the crowd was a huge factor in throwing Brady off his groove. One time I blame Mom for throwing Jake off his groove, though. He was back to pass, looking for an open receiver when suddenly Mom yelled, "Come on Jake!!!!" I swear to you, Jake twitched at the sound of her voice and flopped the ball to no one. Luckilly, it wasn't a factor in the outcome.
We had a foursome of drunk guys behind us who were big fans and very friendly. One of them started to tickle us and bop us on the head with the free shiny pom pons we got. Mom pretty much ignored him but whenever I turned, he would blame the guy next to him. When I finally said, "Stop getting your friend in trouble," he left us alone for a while. Then his mission was making me cheer more visually by grabbing my arms, throwing them up in the air and waving them back & forth. My arms are still sore this morning. When it became apparent that we were going to win, he leaned forward and yelled in my face, "Is this fuckin awesome or what????" I agreed that it was. Then he faced Mom: "I love you, ma'am!" Mom just laughed. When our new friend leaned back to his seat, the funniest thing overheard at the game was uttered by his buddy: "If you need help closing the deal, you might have to take her Mom, too." Did I mention they were very drunk?
It was a great game simply because we won. The Champ Bailey interception and return completely wore me out - I've never cheered that hard in my life. The only problem was that when that play (and the Patriot int of Plummer) was under review, we had no clue. They never mentioned it to the fans. We thought we were in the midst of a very long TV time out.
So bring on those Steelers!!! And, Tom Brady, your season is "IN-COM-PLETE!"

The Beardening
Before I start, here's my "gossip" for the day: Gwen Stefani is pregnant! I'm very excited for her - practically as excited as I would be if my sister-in-law were having a baby! *hint hint, Derek*
So, on with the post!! In yesterday's Gazette Life section they had an article about Jake Plummer's beard and how, since he's having the best season of his life, he might make having a full beard "acceptable."

I never realized that having a full beard wasn't fashionable. Nor did I realize, as the reporter pointed out, that full beards seemed to belong to communist leaders, mad Russian monks (Rasputin wasn't evil - he was simply misunderstood!) and Unabombers. When I was little, my dad had a full beard and he was none of the above. In fact, he looked pretty dashing. And Collin has a full beard, no matter what he might argue, and he's the most normal person I've ever known. Apparently only 2% of American men have full beards. I was staggered by that statistic. Simply staggered.
But back to Jake and his beard. I'm going out on a limb here and saying...I think Jake looks pretty damn hot with all that hair and the beard. I'm sorry but I do. I think he looks better clean-shaven but he's all rugged and mountain-mannish. But these people are acting like they've never seen a full beard on an athlete before. Have they never noticed Bronco's center Tom Nalen? He was doing Crazy Mountain Man well before Jake was ever a Bronco. And do they not watch hockey? It's practically a law that during the playoffs, hockey players don't shave. Patrick Roy had a hell of a beard going during the last Stanley Cup win, not to mention Shjon Podein and Jon Klemm. A guy in Germany just sent me pictures of Rene Corbet playing with the Mannheim Eagles and he had a full beard during their playoffs. .
I like beards on men. Collin threatens to shave and I get misty-eyed. I just don't see what the big deal is.

Mom & Funny Just Go Together
Sunday I went to the Broncos/Ravens game with Mom. The game itself was blah - no energy as Mom said until the last part of the game. But it's still always fun to go, to see the players, to watch the cheerleaders dance to a hyped-up mix of "Hollaback Girl" and to cheer my team on, even if it is rarely.
On the way up there, Mom was telling me about a show on Friday nights called Close To Home. She watched it for the first time last week and really liked it so she was filling me in. "It started with these two kids in a car doing meth. You know, whatever you do with meth...smoke it, crack it..."
Me: "Did you say 'crack it'?" She laughed and shrugged.
The only touchdown that Baltimore scored was, dare I say, controversial. The Raven receiver caught a long bomb from Boller and ran to the 1 yard before being pushed out of bounds. We all thought the Broncos would be attempting another goal line stand but they reviewed the play and come to find out the receiver stuck his arm out so the ball crossed the plane of the goal line before he stepped out of bounds. Hence - 6 points for the bad guys. Mom was incensed. "Pfft. What does he think he's doing, sticking the ball out like that. What a Smart-Alec!!" I had to laugh as I pointed out that if it had been our receiver that had done that it would have been a smart play but a Raven does it and he's a Smart-Alec! You gotta love her loyalty to the Broncos.
And speaking of her loyalty, she turned to me at one point and said, "The next time I write a letter, if I ever do write a real letter, I'm signing it 'Bleeding Orange & Blue Forever. Karen'." I love it!! A true Broncos fan! What we all need to be!

That Undefeated Thing...
So the Indianapolis Colts are still undefeated. I'm glad they beat New England cuz I really hate Tom Brady & the Pats but...someone needs to beat these Colts! I just can't imagine having another team besides the '72 Dolphins being undefeated. It just doesn't seem right.
I had Collin look up Indy's remaining schedule for me last night and it looks scary...I don't think any of those teams have what it takes to beat the Colts...next week it's Houston...maybe I'll pray for an upset. I was hoping that they would have to face Miami but they don't. See, Miami's pretty good at defending that "We're-The-Only-Undefeated-Team-In-NFL-History" thing...when the '83 Chicago Bears were on the rampage and it looked like they would go without a loss, the Dolphins stepped up and became the only team that season to beat Da Bears.
When Mom & I were at the Broncos/Eagles game, they showed the Indy score on the Jumbo-Tron and Mom said that someone needed to beat those Colts - "I'm tired of them being....you know..." She was trying to think of the word 'undefeated' and all she could come up with was "non-losers!" It works, I guess.
Have a great Tuesday everyone!

Broncos Funday Sunday
Sunday Mom & I went to the Broncos/Eagles game. I fully intended to bring Collin's digital camera to snap photos of the experience but I forgot. Probably just as well - it started raining during the 4th quarter and I would hate to have ruined Collin's camera! The cutest picture that never was, though, would have been Mom showing off her Lynch jersey to Mrs. Lynch. It was the Broncos' Wives Food Drive and John Lynch's wife happened to be collecting donations at the south entrance. Mom went right up to her, showed her the jersey she was wearing and told her that he was her favorite player now. She smiled and said, "Thanks. He's ours, too." She was very nice and really pretty - typical football wife: tall, skinny & blonde!
The game started off so great - I'd like to think that we South Standers helped Donovan McNabb miss every one of his attempted passes during the first quarter by screaming and making Rocky Mountain Thunder. I've never stomped my feet harder or so much - my legs are really sore still from all that "Thunder-makin'." It started off pretty chilly but seconds after we scored the fourth touchdown, the sun came out. God is definitely a Bronco fan! :-) By halftime I had taken off my coat to show off my (awesomely authentic autographed) Trevor Pryce jersey. Sadly, it started to rain in the 4th so back on went the coat & gloves.
Speaking of my favorite player (we were...Trevor), his sack on McNabb was so awesome!! He called it before the play - pointed at the Eagles' QB as he was getting into position for the snap. Then he exploded through the line and laid him flat. It was so great! You'd think that someone would have been covering him but it sure looked like he was left alone.
Best play of the game, though - Jeb Putzier's one-handed snag in the end zone. God, that was beautiful. Jeb's a tough ol' boy, too. He took one hell of a beating Sunday.
I'll admit that I almost fell asleep during the 3rd quarter. With the Eagles attempting a comeback and me running on no sleep (I had to work the night before) I had about had it. Luckily Dominic Foxworth's interception in the endzone woke me up.
When Devoe caught his touchdown, the guys behind us were wondering who #14 was...where did he come from? Mom, whose personality changed when she's at a Bronco game (i.e.: stealing the bench from Mile High), said, "That's Devoe. Keep up here." I don't know if they heard her, though. Then as the dejected Eagles fans were leaving when the rain started, people in our section started waving and singing "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye." When it quieted down some, Mom said, "Buh-Bye! See ya. Not in the playoffs. Hahahaha!"
Mom & I also got to sign a giant Get Well card for Dwayne Carswell before the game. And we spent a lot of time watching the cheerleaders trying to pick out Jake Plummer's girlfriend. I think she was the one dressed as Tinkerbell.
All in all, this ranks up there as one of the most fun games I've ever been to. On the bus ride back, Mom told me that she didn't have anyone to go to the Baltimore game with her. I asked her what the date was then as she was digging out her schedule I said, "I don't know why I'm asking. I'll go." I'm a Broncos junkie. Oh, well - there are worse things to be hooked on!

By Popular Demand
My post yesterday generated some fun comments and since I'm at work without web access, that means that I couldn't reply to those comments. (I email my posts to Collin and he posts them for me. He's such a nice guy!) So, I thought I would use today's post to answer my comments!
Here we go - keep your hands in the car at all times and have fun!
---
John Elway. Pfff.
Andy K.
-Andy's not a Bronco fan, can you tell? Andy, you have to at least admit that Elway was better than Brister! :)
---
Tony Lilly? Good LORD what a blast from the past!
I was at that game in San Diego. The first quarter was great! Then I
had to memorize the words to "Hail to the Redskins."
My friend Bill and I like to play a game where we try to name
irrelevant Broncos that we still actually remember!
Top 10 Irrelevant Broncos:
1) Jack Dolbin
2) Butler By'Not'e
3) Larry Canada
4) Bobby Humphrey
5) Kenny Walker (remember the deaf kid from NE? We all did silent
clapping when he made a play!)
6) Le-Lo Lang
7) Craig Penrose
8) Rick Parros
9) Scott Stankavage
10) Sam Graddy
Do you remember any???
BTW, I LOVE Broncos posts - YAY!!!
Pat Angello
Pat - There were names on there that I haven't heard for years!! Let's see...obscure or irrelevant Broncos...KC Clark, Jeremiah Castille, Mike Harden, Gerald Willhite, David Treadwell...
---
Scotty Stankavage...What an arm! He could fling that pigskin 60, 70
yards. Of course, it was always into the waiting arms of a
defender...(3rd string QB, 1980's, played behind the legendary Elway
and the capable Kubiak). - I thought Stankavage was cute. So was Kubiak.
Kenny Walker: had a sign-language interpreter with him at all times
Sam Graddy was irrelevant? I beg to differ, friend.
Le-Lo Lang? Ha, that's funny. I remember him.
Bobby Humphrey...He coulda been a contenda'!
WHAT ABOUT DARREN DROZDOV? MIKE CROEL?
Derek
---
K.C. CLARK! KEN BELL! - Hey!! You mentioned KC Clark! I should have read farther down before writing my replies! Remember when he smacked that ref in the face for calling back an interception that he had made? I loved that!!
Derek
---
Gaston Green! Luke Prestridge! Norris Weese! Gene Lang! Rob Lytle!
Riley Odoms!
Stop me before Drozdov pukes again!
Bill Purdy
- I'm going through flashback o.d.! Oh my God!! Drozdov...he became a professional wrestler and broke his neck and was paralyzed.
---
Dear Lord, NORRIS WEESE!
If you say that name, GOBLINS WILL COME OUT!
Derek
- No! Not the goblins!!!
---
Um. Go Broncos!
Collin
- You betcha, baby!! GO BRONCOS!
That was fun. It got me racking my brain for old Broncos.
Remember Rich Karlis and his bare foot? Mom & I met him at Chapel Hills Mall one time...some charity he supported had put out a Broncos calendar and he signed it for us. Shanon loved him - when he went to play for The Vikings (whom I hated at the time because during a Monday night game one of the Vikes had broken Gerald Willhite's leg and he was one of my faves! I held a grudge against them until they drafted Daunte Culpepper.) she became a Minnesota fan. I was so disappointed in her. And him.
Mark Jackson & Vance Johnson & Ricky Nattiel - we went to the Citadel Mall around Christmas time to meet The Three Amigos. We stood in line for 3 hours!! But they were all so nice, even after all that time they had been there. Mark Jackson was singing "I've Been In Love Before" by the Cutting Crew while he was signing our poster. That poster hung on Mom & Dad's bedroom door for years! I also met Vance Johnson at the Citadel when I had my broken thumb and he signed my cast. I still have it in a plastic bag in a box. I don't care how bad it stinks - The Vance signed it!!
What was the name of the white receiver we had during The Three Amigos reign? They called him The Gringo. Rick Massey?
Rick Upchurch - he called my friend's house one day looking for relatives. Her mom was so excited that she had talked to thee Rick Upchurch!!
Gerald Willhite and his backflip, Sammy Winder and the Mississippi Mud Walk....
While I tell people right now that Trevor Pryce is my favorite player, my all time favorites will always be Randy Gradishar, Simon Fletcher, Dennis Smith & Steve Atwater. I still get chills watching Atwater lay that hit on Christian Okaye and then standing up and yelling....yeah, getting chills now...
Pat - if you love Bronco posts, you should check out the first week of my archives...there's a story about my Mom & I stole her seat from the old Mile High after the last game there. It's probably my best story!
I could talk all day about The Broncos...I better not. I have work to do!

Monday Morning Quarterback
Collin & I watched Donnie Darko Saturday. There's a scene where Donnie's father is watching the Super Bowl. It's the one where the Washington Redskins beat the Denver Broncos - XXIII, I think. It's obvious that the characters are Bronco fans cuz the dad throws something at the TV in disgust and then says, "We need a quarterback." The other guy says, "No, we need to pick up a safety." YARGH!!!!
I think I missed most of the next scene because I was yelling my thoughts at Collin...poor Collin, he was really pretty much trapped. Here are my thoughts in a more calm & collected manner:
1) We did NOT need a quarterback. We had John Elway. Sadly, he was being coached by Dan Reeves who didn't know how to coach a team to win the Super Bowl. Elway also did not have a running game. He had great receivers but no running backs. What happened when we got Mike Shanahan and Terrell Davis? We won 2 Super Bowls...back to back, nonetheless! Thank you very much whoever wrote Donnie Darko!
2) As for the safety situation, we had Dennis Smith! There's no getting any better than that! We also had Tony Lilly...oh, my, he was cute!! CUTE!! He also was not the best safety to ever grace the Broncos roster. But he was cute. The more I think about the line, "We need to pick up a safety" I realize that he's probably talking about Tony Lilly. Uh! I know he was only interested in getting that cute mug on TV but, did they have to pick on him in a major motion picture?? Did I mention he was really cute?
I have to wonder why the writer picked that year to set the movie and why even show the Super Bowl? To annoy Bronco fans? To remind us of the Super Bowls that we lost? To get a dig in at Elway? Or Tony "Cutest Bronco Ever" Lilly? Out of everything that the movie was about, that's what sticks in my mind. Odd.
